Volunteers

The GOLDEN AGE CENTER has only six paid staff members, two of whom are full-time while the other employees are part-time.  Therefore, VOLUNTEERS are the "Heart" of our operation.  Our generous and hard-working volunteers do the following:

Board of Directors:  Seven volunteers serve on the governing board of directors for alternating two-year terms.  They are voted in by the general membership and meet a minimum of once each month, on the third Wednesday of the month.

Accounting:  Volunteers assist on a regular basis to ensure that:   all Golden Age Center bills are paid and all monies received are deposited on a timely basis; that payroll is completed semi-monthly; and that all reporting requirements of PSA2 Area Agency on Aging are met as needed.  Without these volunteers, it would be next to impossible for Golden Age Center to maintain compliance with all State and Federal requirements.

Blue Barn Thrift Shops:

These  hard-working and dedicated volunteers accept and organize donations for sale to the public between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.  This task frequently includes washing, ironing, mending and even repairing of donated items.  The Blue Barn is a very important ongoing fund-raiser which helps supplement our Federal and State grant monies to keep our Center in business.

Computer Classes:  One of our senior volunteers provides basic computer classes, not only for the benefit of seniors but also available to the entire community.  Another senior volunteer has organized a digital camera and computer photo workshop with weekly sessions.  We occasionally have members of the community who volunteer to teach specific programs such as "Print Shop."  We hope to start a new class to familiarize participants with how to sell merchandise on e-bay.  We gratefully accept donations for any of these classes.

Volunteers for the Nutrition Program:

Table Set-up:  Volunteers come each morning to set up the tables for the two meal sittings.

Waiters/Waitresses:  Two or more volunteers each day help package the Homebound meals for delivery prior to our sit-down meal service.  Golden Age Center is the only senior center of which we are aware that offers "sit-down" meals (not Buffet Style) at both servings.  These folks do a fantastic job of serving as many as 120 persons in one day -- quickly and efficiently -- and then they clear the tables and help the kitchen crew clean up.

Front Desk:  A different volunteer each day accepts donations at the front desk for meals.  This person tracks clientele participation on a daily basis.

Bingo:  Volunteers run a very popular Bingo program every Thursday afternoon.  We also feature a "Marathon Bingo" three or four Saturdays each year.  Proceeds from Bingo are a very important part of assisting the Center's financial stability.

Firewood:  Volunteers cut and deliver donated firewood to needy persons and the Center also accepts donations for wood as another way to help in fund raising.

Maintenance/Grounds/Atrium:  Volunteers help with plant care, flower and tree planting, weed eating, and minor upkeep of the building and grounds.

Flags/American & California: Two volunteers who are veterans raise and lower the American Flag and the flag of the State of California on a daily basis, weather permitting.

"Mountain Treasures" Cookbook Fund Raising Project:  In the summer of 2005,  Golden Age Center volunteers compiled and published a cookbook with recipes donated by local residents and Center volunteers.  We featured local artist Selena Marshall's whimsical rendition of downtown Weaverville for our cover page.  We published over 1,100 cookbooks in two printings.  The publisher, Cookbook Publishers (www.cookbookpublishers.com), have used our cover in their website as an example of a customer-designed cover.  The books sold for $10.00 each.

Monthly Newsletter:  Volunteers write, "publish," collate, fold, sort by zip code, and mail the GAC Newsletter, the BUGLE, to over 300 persons county wide on a monthly basis.  This newsletter provides current information on a variety of subjects of interest to seniors throughout Trinity County.  With a suggested donation of $8.00, our newsletter pays for itself.  For your information, the BUGLE is included in this website every month.  (See "Newsletter" button)

Golden Age Center Website: Volunteers have worked very hard to develop this website with many interesting digital and scanned photos to present a clear picture of what GAC is all about.  This site is updated on a monthly basis.  A photo slide show presents our most recent events of interest.  (See "Special Moments" button)

Fund Raising Events:  Thanks to our many faithful and loyal volunteers, we have presented as many as four very successful fund raising dinner events.  Since September of 2001, we have presented a "Country-Style" Rib Dinner which was so well attended the first time that we ran out of ribs and had to offer "rain checks" for those not served.  Our second success was that November of 2001,  we presented an "Early Christmas" Bazaar.  Volunteers donated hundreds of beautiful hand-made items for sale, as well as delicious home-made jams, jellies, cookies and candies.  Both of these above have become annual events, and we have had many very successful events in the following years.
