Our History

The Golden Age Center, Inc. (GAC), was established and incorporated in February of 1976.  The Center was created through a community effort to provide a place where older persons are able to feel welcome and comfortable and where they can obtain a daily nutritional meal at a reasonable cost.

The Center is located approximately two miles north of downtown Weaverville, CA, just off Highway 3,  at 201 Browns Ranch Road .  The six-acre site is nestled in the Trinity Alps with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.  The Center location provides good walking access to the only senior housing available in Weaverville, the Weaver Creek Senior Apartments, 100 Browns Ranch Road (1-800-735-2929).

The first building to house the Golden Age Center in 1976 was located just below the downtown businesses on the south side of Main Street (currently a lawyer's office building).  Meals were cooked on two apartment-size stoves with volunteers assisting the paid cook to feed the approximately 20 to 25 participants.  A bus alternated picking up and delivering persons from Hayfork, Trinity Center and Junction City, as well as Weaverville, to the Center.

In 1978, the Center was able to move to a larger site where again, with the help of the community and many generous volunteers, a modular structure was erected adjacent to Lee Fong Park.  The modular which now serves as our office space, conference room, TV room and Computer Lab was the Center dining room, which served between 35 and 50 participants.  The present Blue Barn I building served as a storage building.  A garden was maintained on nearby property to provide fresh produce for the nutrition program.  One very successful fund raiser, presented several times, featured a "Rock-a-thon" with seniors, sponsored by local businesses and individuals, rocking their rocking chairs for hours on both sides of the downtown Main Street sidewalks.  Other successful fund raisers included rummage sales, dinners, and performances by the Kitchen Band.

Our present Golden Age Center building was constructed in 1986, made possible once again by many donations from community businesses and residents.   This structure features a beautiful solarium/atrium which greets seniors as they enter the building.  Included in the Center, which is handicapped-accessible, are a full service kitchen, a dining room capable of serving 150 persons, office area, a large conference room, a lounge room with pool table and computer classroom, and a game room with television, video center, and card tables.
